A man, who kidnapped and murdered his ex-girlfriend's son in Amaoti near Phoenix, has begun serving a life sentence.
Thembelani Ntengwana, 31, was jailed for the 2019 crimes in Durban this week.
The High Court heard that the mother of 16-month-old Sibongakonke Nduduzi left him in the care of his seven-year-old sibling and two other children, while she and her friends went to a neighbour's house.
Ntengwana kidnapped the child later that night.
The boy's body was found a few days later.
He had been strangled.
National Prosecution Authority (NPA) KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Natasha Kara says police were able to trace Ntengwana's location in the Eastern Cape through his cell phone.
"Thembelani Ntengwana was sentenced to life and 10 years imprisonment in the Durban High Court.
"The NPA welcomes this fruitful collaboration between the investigation and prosecution teams which resulted in this successful prosecution."
