Man dies in Mariannhill booze stampede
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Police have launched a probe after a 45-year-old man died during a stampede outside a liquor store in Mariannhill, west of Durban.

Officers say a group of people went to a liquor store, where they helped themselves to alcohol dumped outside the outlet on Wilshire Road on Monday night.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says it's understood that expired liquor was kept outside the store as the owners were in the process disposing of it.
Mbele says the community noticed the alcohol, stormed the premises and began looting.

"When they saw the police approaching, they ran to different direction and there was a stampede.
"Others also jumped over the high wall. When police managed to disperse them they were contacted by other community members saying there was one person that was dead. When they came back, that's when they found a body of a 45-year-old man..."
Mbele says a post-mortem will determine the exact cause of death.
