Man in court following deadly shootout in Isipingo

A man is due in the Durban Magistrate's Court today following a deadly shootout with police in Isipingo, south of the city.
The 29-year-old was arrested on Saturday after officers acted on information received and intercepted a planned robbery at a business premises.

Nine other suspects were killed in the gun battle with police.
SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the suspect is facing charges of attempted murder and robbery.
"Deceased suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms which are riffles and pistols, as well as explosives and the break-in implements. Even though I can not exactly say the number, but it was a group of more than 10 suspects. We are also still searching for more suspects," she said.

Meanwhile, eThekwini Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda has commended the work done by police in foiling the robbery. He says intelligence driven operations will restore business confidence in the municipality... as talks to increase police visibility continue.
