Nine killed, one arrested in Isipingo shootout

The number of suspected robbers killed in a shootout with police in Isipingo, south of Durban this morning has increased to nine.

Seven of the suspects were killed in the early hours of this morning when they attempted to rob a business premises in the area, but encountered police who had been waiting for them after receiving intelligence. Others managed to escape and a manhunt ensued.

As a result, two more were shot and killed.

Police had earlier confiscated a number of guns, break-in implements and explosives. It is believed the gang had planned to break into safes at the business premises. 

It is thought that up to 20 people may have been involved in the plans.

The police's Nqobile Gwala confirmed the details.

"While police were busy at the first crime scene, where seven suspects were killed during a shootout, officers heard gunshots come from the other side not too far away", she said.

"It was two suspects who had opened for on police. During an exchange of gun fire they were subsequently killed", Gwala said.
