The driver of the taxi says the man boarded the taxi at the Phoenix Plaza in the morning.
"These two guys across the road asked me if I'm going to Durban Station, so I replied yes we are going to the station, that's where they were going to board a bus to go to Johannesburg. the guy put his bag down and took a seat at the back. We were not aware there were explosives and the Hawks unit was following us from Phoenix all the way to Umhlanga."
Experts were called to process the crime scene and secure the devices.
The suspect's due to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
