The suspect boarded the fully loaded taxi at the Phoenix Plaza on Tuesday morning on his way to the Durban Bus Station.

The vehicle was intercepted by the Hawks on the M41 in Umhlanga.

The driver explained to Newswatch that he had just dropped off passengers in Umhlanga when he noticed two cars following him.

"All of a sudden the lights came on and the sirens. Next thing there were police all round the vehicle with guns. They said I should jump off the vehicle."

"The passengers were all over the fall. It was hectic and a deadly experience. The guy tried to run away, which the Hawks unit caught him, and put him on the floor with handcuffs and they waited for the bomb squad to come in."

He says they were told there was a bomb in the vehicle.

"I just went cold. It is a bad feeling not knowing what is going on and guns just coming out pointing at you and them saying jump off and we thank God we are safe.

"It was red sticks with explosives written on it. We did fear because we never knew whether we are going home alive or in a body bag."

It's believed that the suspect could work for a cash-in-transit gang.

Authorities have not yet confirmed what charges the man is facing.
