Man (76) arrested for murder, attempted murder

A police officer is receiving treatment in hospital after being shot near Hillcrest - apparently by an elderly man who is a suspect in a murder case.

Hillcrest detectives had been busy with operation for wanted suspects in the early hours of this morning - nabbing four alleged criminals.
They then proceeded to a homestead in KwaNqetho - in search of a murder suspect.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says when officers identified themselves - a 76-year-old man opened fire on them - wounding one. The old man then fled the scene.
"Later in the day today, Hillcrest police arrested a 76-year-old suspect for a murder he committed last month, and the attempted murder of a police official. He's due to appear in court next week," she said.
Acting provincial commissioner - Major General Bheki Langa says they will not tolerate members of the force being attacked.
