Maladministration uncovered, eMadlangeni Municipality under administration
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
The eMadlangeni Municipality has been placed under administration, while a forensic investigation into alleged maladministration there will be expedited.
The Cooperative Governance Department says the municipality has been dysfunctional.
MEC Sipho Hlomuka says the municipality contravened the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Municipal Systems Act by failing to adopt the 2020/21 budget timeously.
He says some officials and councillors have been implicated in fraud and corruption among other problems.
"One of the allegations is that there are councillors or officials that have benefited in a project of electricity, there are allegations of some councillors involved in a mall of eMadlangeni.

"The councillors are failing to convene their own meetings for a number of times, so we are going to fast track this investigation," he said.
Last month, the municipality's deputy mayor Ntsikelelo Ndlovu was recalled by the ANC in KZN.
eMadlangeni's former municipal manager, Velaphi Kubheka has been appointed administrator and has been tasked with implementing the recovery plan.
