The threat of further industrial action is over bonuses and disciplinary action being taken against striking employees found guilty of misconduct.

"We do not want to embark on strike action or protest action but unfortunately, this is what Eskom did. Eskom provokes members because we cannot move, we cannot sign the wage settlement until we have ironed out this issue. If we cannot sign the wage settlement, then unfortunately, it means we are headed towards a strike," NUMSA's Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said.

She says an urgent meeting scheduled to take place this week with the utility and Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan did not happen.

Eskom's Dikatso Mothae says legal action will be brought against workers who embark on strike action, as the power utility is classified as an essential services provider.

"That would then mean that we are still able to provide electricity to the country," she said.

Trade union has Solidarity accepted an offer by Eskom. NUM says it will only sign a wage deal if the utility does not go ahead with disciplinary action against its members for alleged sabotage.
