National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise approved the debate during a parliamentary programming meeting on Thursday.

The motion is being brought by the African Transformation Movement (ATM).

The party’s leader Vuyo Zungula believes a debate and vote on President Ramaphosa’s leadership is long overdue.

Zungula says the party has been informed that the voting will take place by way of secret ballot, even though they would have preferred MPs to be able to cast their ballot in secret.

“It takes away the right of Members of Parliament to vote according to their conscience.”

He says President Ramaphosa has failed to make a tangible difference in the lives of ordinary South Africans.

“The crime rate has gone up, unemployment gone up, the economy have been contracting and we are having a downgrade from rating agencies. Therefore, the presidency of Mr Ramaphosa has basically made the lives of South Africans to be much worse before he was even president.”

Zungula says the motion was filed earlier this year before lockdown began.

“When we tabled this in February, our reasons were limited to everything that happened in February. But from the time lockdown has started until now, there is so much that transpired, including the trip that the ANC took with the minister (to Zimbabwe).

“There is a lot that happened in the past six months that further proved that Ramaphosa is not the right person to lead this country. This country deserves morally upright leaders that are able to lead the country.”
