That’s according to Police Minister Fikile Mbalula. He’s promised residents they will feel safe again.

"The hardships there come from a brutal past of cramming blacks up in cheap labour [areas]. The dehumanised body knows not how to be civil. These hostels have removed the dignity of our people," he says.

Mbalula toured the infamous hostel, where more than 90 people were murdered since 2014, on Friday.

The first conviction related to the killings was also secured on Friday, when a hitman was sentenced to life behind bars for shooting a fellow resident.

KZN police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says they hope this will be the first of many.

"There are other cases that are still at court. There are some of the suspects who are still in custody right now - waiting for their trial to go ahead. We hope that our evidence against them is strong enough - leading to the conviction of suspects still in custody," he says.
