Westville resident, John Easton had been driving in the northbound carriageway when he witnessed the attack near the M7 interchange, south of Durban.

"I was in the fast lane, so I was concentrating on where I was going and just out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy lift his hand up above his head with this massive knife and start chasing the individual up the side of the road. This guy needed help right now, he was in imminent danger," said Easton.

Easton, who travels on that stretch of freeway on a regular basis, says the weapon looked like a butcher's knife. Speaking to Newswatch, he said everything else that unfolded remained a blur.

"It is something you can't really explain. Seeing something like that -  It's a crazy situation. It is not like a bar fight or anything. Everybody was going to work on a general day and the [victim] was just stuck there on the side of the road, defenceless," he said.

Easton says he stopped on the side of the freeway and reversed back to the the stationary car and approached the attackers.

He says the two men eventually fled the scene, laughing as they crossed the road.

Medics say the victim, whose car had broken down, was in a critical condition when he was taken to hospital.

Community members apprehended one of the suspects and handed him over to police.

Cato Manor police have confirmed a case of attempted murder has been opened.
