Officers say the 39-year-old man had apparently broken down on the N2 northbound carriageway and pulled over just after the M7 interchange, south of Durban at about 10am.

He was then accosted by two men who tried to rob him of his cellphone.

The victim sustained multiple stab wounds to his upper body.

SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the attackers fled the scene without any of his belongings. Community members who witnessed the stabbing gave chase and apprehended one of the suspects.

Gwala says a 26-year-old man was handed over to police.

Paramedics who responded to the scene said at the time that the motorist was taken to a Durban hospital in a critical condition.
