Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Police have opened a case of attempted murder after a motorist who had stopped on the side of the N2 freeway after experiencing car trouble was attacked by two men and left with life-threatening injuries yesterday.
He was then accosted by two men who tried to rob him of his cellphone.
The victim sustained multiple stab wounds to his upper body.
SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the attackers fled the scene without any of his belongings. Community members who witnessed the stabbing gave chase and apprehended one of the suspects.
Gwala says a 26-year-old man was handed over to police.
Paramedics who responded to the scene said at the time that the motorist was taken to a Durban hospital in a critical condition.
