LISTEN: Umgeni Water says tap water remains safe to drink following Dusi spill

Umgeni Water has confirmed oil and caustic soda that flowed into the Umsunduzi River has reached a point of the Inanda dam.

But spokesperson, Shami Harichunder says the pollution is some 18km away from the utility's extraction point.

Harichunder says they are testing the water two to three times a day.

A tanker collapse at the Willowton Group oil factory in Pietermaritzburg led to a large amount of crude oil, palm fatty acids and caustic soda spilling into the river last week.

It has also emerged that six employees were injured during the incident.

Clean-up and rehabilitation efforts are continuing.

Communities have been urged to avoid drinking or coming into contact with water directly from the river. The river remains off-limits for fishing, removing fish from the river, and other activities.
