Dusi river clean-up continues

Water and Sanitation officials are applying more pressure on the Willowton Group, issuing the company with an order to comply with containment and rehabilitation operations at the Msunduzi river in Pietermaritzburg.

A vegetable oil storage tank collapsed there last week, causing a mass spillage of oil and caustic soda.  

The company says it is concerned and committed to dealing with the incident.

It has put together an independent team of environmental and river health specialists to handle the process.  

Dead fish have meanwhile washed up on the banks of the river. There have also been reports of livestock falling ill from drinking water from the river.

Head of Health at the Msunduzi Municipality, Vishal Singh says there have been cleanups from Msunduzi to Inanda dam.  

He says most of the solids have been removed and the colour of the water is returning to normal.  

Singh says the river system remains a no-go area.

"The public is warned to refrain from using the water for various purposes."

He says this includes: drinking, washing clothes and dishes, irrigation, removing of fish from the river, swimming, fishing and canoeing.
