LISTEN: Labour court interdicts mass banking sector strike

Friday's nationwide strike in the banking sector's been declared unlawful.

The Labour Court in Braamfontein has ruled that the protests scheduled to take place countrywide cannot go ahead.
Around 50 000 bank workers belonging to finance union, SASBO and COSATU were set to down tools against job losses and retrenchments.

SASBO warned there would be a total shutdown, with ATMs, speedpoints and other services affected.
But Business Unity SA filed an urgent application, on behalf of the country's commercial banks, to prevent the work stoppage.
This morning, Judge Hilary Rabkin-Naicker explained why the strike cannot go ahead.
LISTEN:
This section gives workers the right to take part in a protected strike.
However, it says the matter must go through labour council NEDLAC first.
If attempts to resolve the matter fail there, another notice must be served to NEDLAC on proposed protest action.
