Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize says Treasury is aware that government will have to carry most of the costs for the procurement of a COVID-19 vaccine.
He briefed Parliament’s health committee on Tuesday on the status of healthcare services in the provinces and the rollout strategy of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“We have had lots of discussion with the Minister of Finance [Tito Mboweni] to say that the fiscus is going to carry the major burden of having to procure the vaccine.

On the process, we also agreed that we will activate other means of raising additional funds which will be to approach the medical schemes and ask them to make a contribution on the basis of social solidarity.
“And the third one is to get businesses to make their own contributions and this could also be worked together with the Solidarity Fund,” said Mkhize.
