Liquor traders plead with president to allow weekend sales

Liquor traders are pleading with government to allow alcohol sales over weekends.

The industry has written a formal letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa petitioning for restrictions on trade to be amended.
The National Liquor Traders Council says the current restrictions have caused financial devastation.
It says this has also resulted in some traders and consumers breaking the curfew.
The industry's Lucky Ntimane says over 200 000 jobs might be lost.

"We would like to believe that government allowing us to be able to operate in that space will not only be able to alleviate against the economic hardships that are faced by our members but it will also be able to kick start the economy," he said.
"But also contribute in the eradication of stemming out of the tide against covid-19 because what you are then getting now is you are creating another occasion that is currently absent , where you are allowing people to be able to purchase alcohol and be able to enjoy it at home."
