Air cargo's seen a 55% recovery in business thanks to an increase in domestic and international airline activities at King Shaka International Airport.

The TradePort's Mlibo Bantwini says their cargo terminal's processed more than 10 000 tonnes of cargo since April 2022, an increase of 31% from the previous year.

He says a number of factors helped, including the lifting of pandemic travel bans, e-commerce and the reopening of factories.

Bantwini says they welcome the re-establishment of more of Durban's domestic and regional air services.

"Certain airlines are at different stages of recovery, but overall the air cargo market is recovering.

"Everyone wants to see pre-pandemic levels returning in terms of volumes. We are not there yet, but the amount of growth we have been having over the past year, for example, demonstrates that we should get there by mid-2024."
