Lifestyle audits of executive underway - Ramaphosa
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that the long-delayed lifestyle audits of members of the executive are underway.
In 2018, during the debate on the State of the Nation Address, Ramaphosa said the audits would be conducted on all cabinet ministers.
Lifestyle audits are aimed at preventing fraud and corruption in public service by ensuring that the lifestyles of government employees are in line with their income level.
In his response to questions in the National Assembly on Tuesday, Ramaphosa said that due to budget constraints, capacity was built within the Office of the Director-General for conducting these audits.
He said during this process, delays occurred.
“This process is being led by the DG because the interests of executive members are managed by her office. We wanted this process to reside there and be properly administered, and it is in this regard that these audits are now continuing; the aim of the audit is to collect as much information as possible.
“That office is now serviced with competent, skilled personnel with experience in conducting lifestyle audits. The capacity-building exercise tool took longer than expected.
"This is the first time that the national government is doing a lifestyle audit on its members; it requires new systems that have been set in place, it requires processes and methodologies that should be employed so that it can bring to bear all information that is required.
Ramaphosa told MPs that the DG would decide on the most appropriate way to communicate the outcomes of the audits once they had been completed.
