At least 80% learners return to school, non-contact sports resume

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is asking parents to please allow their children to return to school.
Motshekga was updating the media on Thursday morning, on key developments in the sector, under COVID-19 level 1 restrictions.
Since the gradual reopening of schools from August, the Minister says they've seen a return rate of at least 80%.
"We are, however, concerned that there are learners who have not returned to school yet. In the schools that we have visited, the return rate is between eighty to ninety percent (80% - 90%).
"While it is encouraging to see the numbers increase gradually, we appeal to parents release their children to return to school," she said.

She added: "We hardly see any schools being closed and reopened; and this can be attributed to the adherence to the revised standard operating procedures."
Motshekga says learners can now participate in some non-contact sports.
"With the country having moved to Alert Level 1, we would like to propose that non-contact sport training and physical activities in schools should resume, subject to compliance with measures to prevent and combat the spread of COVID-19."
"We will gazette new Directions in this regard once the processes have been completed."
