Latest crime stats: 14% spike in reported rape cases

The number of rape cases reported to the police has increased by 13.7%, according to the latest crime statistics.

Parliament's police committee says this translates to 13 799 cases filed between January and March 2022. 


Major-general Norman Sekhukhune briefed Parliament on Friday morning on the crime stats for the fourth quarter of the 2021/ 2022 financial year. 


He says a significant number of sexual assault cases were opened in KZN in the first three months of year.

"We have all the provinces record increases in terms of rape. Gauteng contributed 21%, KZN contributed 19%, Eastern Cape contributed 17%, Western Cape contributed 12% and in total, these four provinces contributed 70% of rapes that have been reported." 


He says KZN features prominently in the top 30 police stations that recorded the highest incidents of rape. 


"The top five stations are from four different provinces, which are from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Limpopo."    

There's been an increase in trio crimes in South Africa. 

The police ministry has been briefing Parliament on the latest crime statistics.

Major-General Norman Sekhukhune says trio crimes, which are made up of robbery, cash-in-transit heists and car jackings have gone up by 4,7% when compared to the previous quarter.

"The highest contributor in terms of trio crimes was Mamelodi East, Harare, Inanda, Plessislaer, Tembesa and of these top 30 stations in the trio crimes, five have recorded decreases that is your Honeydew and then we had Pinetown, Ivory Park, Kempton Park, Umlazi."
