South Africa's murder rate jumps by 22%

South Africa's murder rate has risen by a staggering 22% in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period in 2021.

That's according to the police's crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2021/ 2022 financial year. 


The Portfolio Committee on Police told Parliament there'd been an increase of 1 107 murders committed in the country - compared to the previous quarter - taking the overall number of murder cases to 6 083. 


Major-general Norman Sekhukhune says a lot of these crimes took place in January with KZN contributing the most, statistically.


"We had more of murders in the month of January that is an 872 increase followed in February by at 104. In the month of March, we had 131. 


"Then in terms of the percentage contribution to the murders in terms of the province, the province of KwaZulu-Natal contributed 26% to the murders, Gauteng contributed 23%. Eastern Cape contributed 17% and the Western Cape contributed 17%."
