Eugene Ishwarlall is one of many frustrated residents.

He says the problem started a few weeks ago, as people began moving into Link Road. They tried to build on private land.

"It's been going on for a couple of weeks now. The sad part is that they actually stone vehicles. So it's a dangerous situation."

Ishwarlall says they were also caught off guard when protests erupted.

"Some of the shack dwellers want to take some land adjacent to the Ridge Mall."

"Metro Police are trying to stop them, this resulted in a road closure, burning of tyres and unruly behaviour and this is becoming a bit of a problem because it's causing inconvenience."

The land is understood to be owned by a mall in Shallcross.

Durban metro police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad says they've reached out to the owners.
