KZN water woes: AG points finger at lack of maintenance
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
KZN's auditor-general
has proposed a list of recommendations after highlighting eThekwini's failure
to adequately maintain water infrastructure.
"Under the wastewater treatment works, we looked at three treatment works. The overall observation we came up with is that there is a lack of adequate maintenance to prevent the malfunctioning of these treatment works.
"There are inadequate measures that are put in place to prevent pollution and degradation of adjacent waterways. We also noted that there we delayed CM processes that also hindered some of the identified concerns and issues."
Noma Mkhize presented her office's findings during a council meeting at the ICC on Wednesday.

Parts of Durban have been in the grip of a water supply crisis that's affected several areas including Durban North, Umhlanga, Phoenix, Verulam and Tongaat.
Mkhize said they've already shared some of their recommendations with municipal managers.
"Such as conducting regular reviews of existing sewage networks and developing plans to address deficiencies and ensuring that operating and capital budgets are appropriate to support the action plans are put in place."
She said her office also conducted assessments on the environmental processes followed and identified plant licensing risks.
