Opposition parties ‘disheartened’ at failed Kaunda confidence vote

Opposition political parties in eThekwini say they're disappointed and surprised by a failed motion to remove Mxolisi Kaunda from the mayoral seat.

On Wednesday, Mxolisi survived a no-confidence vote at the ICC to have him removed council.

The IFP filed the motion in November, supported by the DA, citing service delivery issues and damning findings by the auditor-general, among other reasons.

Ninety-eight councillors supported the motion - while 109 were against it.

Action SA's Saneli Zuma says they are surprised the motion failed.

"It is disheartening that some political parties abstain from voting to remove Kaunda, who on multiple occasions has proven that he is unfit to perform the duties of his office."

The DA's Mzamo Billy still believes it's time for the mayor to go.

"We do believe that Councillor Kaunda as the mayor is not doing justice to the position; he's been an absent mayor. He's failed to provide the right sort of leadership to make sure that the issues that exist are resolved, so he's responsible for all of this."

Meanwhile, the ANC's labelled the move to have Kaunda dismissed as an attempt to score cheap political points.

The party says it salutes Kaunda and other officials who've been working to rebuild the city after the 2022 April floods.
