KZN Transport removes unroadworthy buses ahead of annual Reed Dance

KwaZulu-Natal Transport has taken more than 20 buses off the road ahead of the annual Reed Dance at King Goodwill Zwelithini’s Enyokeni Palace in Nongoma this weekend.
In 2013, a group of maidens, their minders and a bus driver were killed in a horror crash on the R66.
Yesterday, Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda led an inspection of the buses that will be taking the maidens to and from this year's ceremony.
"We have conducted an inspection of more than 150 buses. Within that, there are 22 that were found with some defects. Some of them talk to the issue of brakes. Most of our accidents have been caused by brake failure," Kaunda said.

The MEC says hundreds of law enforcement officers will be deployed to the area over the weekend to ensure the safety of the maidens.
"We will be having - in the northern part of the province - more than 300 law enforcement officers. Even the buses with stickers are going to be further investigated because we must be sure that the driver behind the wheel is not drunk, and possesses all documentation that make him or her a legitimate driver," he said.
