KZN Transport alarmed by crimes against maintenance, construction workers

The Department of Transport in KZN says it's alarmed by the recent spike in crimes targeting road maintenance and construction workers.

The department says there've been several incidents reported on route P100 that's in eThekwini's uMzinyathi area. 


Staff members were held at gunpoint and their state vehicles hijacked. 


In another incident a few weeks ago a group of grass cutters fell victim to a robbery.

The Department of Transport's Kwanele Ncalane says these crimes not only affect service delivery, workers are too afraid to do their jobs.  


He says they've asked the police to closely monitor the situation in and around eThekwini.


 "The issue of road maintenance, grass cutting, verge cutting, clearing of drainage and so forth are some of the work performed in these particular areas so that we can keep our road infrastructure in a good condition. 


"If these criminal syndicates are allowed to continue to terrorise staff and tamper with equipment this is going to undermine progress made on the ground."
