There were major delays yesterday morning, when workers affiliated to SATAWU protested at the Tongaat, Mtunzini and Marianhill toll plazas over pay yesterday.

They want their salaries to double, which would bring their monthly earnings to around R6000.

"It shows in the financial statement that six executives took home last year R80-million including R3-million in guaranteed bonuses," SATAWU's Zanele Sabela said.

They have been locked in wage negotiations with employer Intertoll since late last year.

The company was hired by SANRAL to manage four of its toll plazas.

"When we consider the fact that a toll worker will on average collect R20 000 per day, we think there is a problem in terms of how the income is distributed. This is why workers are so up in arms," Sabela said.

Intertoll Africa says it remains committed to addressing workers' grievances as soon as possible.
