A teenage boy has died after being hit by a train in Verulam, north of Durban, this morning.
Reaction Unit's Prem Balram says the young man was on his way to school when the accident took place, at around 7am.
“Upon arrival, we found a 15-year-old student was run over by a train. Paramedics who were in attendance, declared the child deceased a short while later,” he says.
He says the young man was a Grade 8 student, at Temple Valley Secondary School.
And that according to his family, he had been robbed at the local taxi rank a short while ago and had changed the route he took to school - to take him past the railway station - as a result.
Meanwhile SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirms that police were on scene.
“We can confirm that this morning at about 7am, a 15-year-old boy was on his way to school when he was knocked by a train in Verulam,” she says, “He was certified dead at the scene”.
An inquest docket was opened at Verulam police station for further investigation.
