Nzama, whose appointment was announced last week, takes over from Bheki Masuku, who acted in the role after the contract of former HOD, Nkosinathi Sishi, was not renewed earlier this year.

Nzama, has been in the education sector for 33 years.

Natu's Allan Thompson, is confident the new HOD will turn around the province's declining matric results.

"We are convinced that at least he has been in the system so he understands what were the problems that constitutes such a serious decline of the matric examination. So we believe that perhaps this is his opportunity now to introduce some changes,"he said.

Sadtu's Nomarashiya Caluza, says Nzama should continue with the the turn around strategy to ensure that public education in the province reaches greater heights.

"He has capacity to deliver towards the improvement of quality public education in KZN. His office must be open for all of us as stakeholders so we are able to have a platform," she said.
