KZN storms: More climate change awareness needed, says expert

A climate expert says the government needs to focus on climate-resilient infrastructure designs.

The UKZN's Professor Tafadzwa Mabhaudhi has been commenting on the damage caused by a series of devastating storms in KZN recently.
Thunderstorms battered parts of eThekwini and the north coast over the weekend.
At least eight people lost their lives in Durban, while hundreds of homes and some pump stations were severely affected.
Mabhaudhi says more climate change awareness is needed.

"Going into the future, we need to become more aware and more sensitive to the realities of climate change and its impact on lives and livelihood and how we respond as a society to address this challenge."
He says the government should start talking about sourcing money for infrastructure improvements.
"There’s an elephant in the room, which is the cause implications for municipalities, provincial government and the country as a whole, to address this issue of making this infrastructure climate resilient. That's where the issues of funding and access to climate finance become a topical issue."
