KZN storm: Resident speaks of damages to her home

KwaZulu-Natal residents affected by the gale force winds over the weekend are beginning to repair damages caused to their homes.

Strong winds saw roofs blown off homes and businesses, street poles and trees uprooted and power cables damaged from the south coast to the north. 


KZN Emergency Medical Services says one person was killed while walking in Empangeni when a tree collapsed on power cables on Saturday night.

Officials say several other people were critically hurt across the province while some vehicles were also crushed by trees. 


Resident, Zaheera Khan says the roof of their home was blown off.


"The front part of my roof had flown away. I think when it started flying all over the place - it damaged the back of the roof. There's a hole in the ceiling and the roof which led to water coming into the ceiling of one of my rooms upstairs. My husband was away that time when it happened but he had to come back home to assist us because I could hear things flying all over the place and I didn't know what to do or how to go forward," she says.

Municipalities and government departments have also begun mop-up operations. 


"We remain on high alert since the weekend winds, we ask the commuters to remain on high alert when we issue out warnings they must adhere to them," says eThekwini mayoral spokesperson, Mthunzi Gumede.
