Nets have been reintroduced to beaches between uMhlanga and Anstey's but are still out of the water between Isipingo and Scottburgh.

The gear was removed during the recent workers strike.

The board's Mike Anderson-Reade says fish have been venturing closer to shore during the sardine run.

"In terms of the other activities surrounding the sardine run - it seems to be pretty quiet. The dolphins are still in the area but not in the thousands like they have been. We still haven't replaced anything between Isipingo and Scottburgh beach due to the sardine activity.

Anderson-Reade says a monitoring flight will be sent out.

"If things are quiet there then we will start reintroducing in the area,"  Anderson-Reade said.

He says there had been significant shark activity in areas where shoals of sardines were still present.

Beachgoers are being urged to check the status of swimming beaches with lifeguards before entering the water.
