KZN serial rapist handed double life sentence

A serial rapist in KwaZulu-Natal has been slapped with a double life sentence for attacks on women in Umlazi and Tongaat.
The Pietermaritzburg High Court handed Mduduzi Shembe another 61 years following his conviction.

Prosecutors say he and his accomplice also robbed the women after invading their homes between 2017 and 2018.
KZN NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara says DNA evidence linked Shembe to the crimes.

His sentences will run concurrently.
"The NPA commends the work done by the prosecution and police in securing this conviction”, Kara says. “Sentences of this nature are indicative of our dedication to fighting crime, moreover gender-based violence."
