Officials say a vehicle was ambushed while travelling on the R34 near the Mfuli game reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

They say the vehicle had come across logs that had been placed on the road, and as it was slowing down, it came under fire.

But members of the Special Task Force and the National Intervention Unit, who had received intelligence about the planned attack, responded quickly, forcing the robbers to flee empty-handed.

Their bakkie was later found abandoned in Mthunzini but no arrests have been made.

This woman drove past the scene.

"When I got to our lane, it was blocked with a cash-in-transit vehicle. There wasn't a soul around. It's actually quite eerie. As we drove past and onto the oncoming lane, we saw that the back door was open," she said.

It is the second incident in the province in as many days. Yesterday, gunmen tried to rob a cash-in-transit vehicle on the R68 between Dundee and Nqutu but fled after the guards opened fire on them.
