Fidelity Security has expressed concern that a cash-in-transit heist near Greytown this week - adds to the growing number of these incidents in KZN.

Three of the company's guards were hurt in the attack on the road linking Greytown and Msinga on Wednesday.

A group of around 20 heavily armed men approached the armoured vehicle the guards had been travelling in - shooting them off the road. They then used explosives to access the vault.

Up until now, the use of explosives in such attacks has been confined - more or less - to Johannesburg.

Fidelity issued a statement on the heist yesterday.

Fidelity’s CEO Wahl Bartmann says there’s been an unacceptably high increase in the number of cash-in-transit incidents across the industry this month - following on from an apparent lull in June.

He says that last week alone there were four cross pavement incidents and three vehicle attacks - one in the Eastern Cape and two in Bloemfontein.

And, he says, with Wednesday’s attack in KZN - this trend is particularly concerning, as it could indicate that crime is simply being dispersed from Gauteng into other areas.

Bartmann says while they’re encouraged by recent arrests made by the police, it is imperative that all stakeholders involved continue to apply pressure.
