Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala says the newborn was discovered just over a week ago, by a passer-by who heard the infant crying in the bush.

"He decided to check where the cries were coming from and to his surprise, he saw a baby wrapped in a blue and white blanket. Underneath the blanket, the baby was wearing a white romper. He took the baby and immediately contacted the police," she says.

The infant has been taken to a place of safety.

"Police from Hillcrest SAPS attended the scene and the baby was taken to hospital for a medical examination. He was found to be in a healthy state and he was placed at a place of safety," Gwala says.

She says they are searching for the child's parents.

Anyone who might have information about the parents of this baby can contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Sihle Ntuli, on 079 502 9113/ 031 325 5001 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
