'You don't expect to find a baby on your doorstep': Glenwood woman
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A Durban woman has described the heartbreak of finding a six-week old baby boy left at her doorstep.
Laverne van Schalkwyk says she had just returned from a run on Thursday and was looking for her keys into her Glenwood home when she noticed a shopping packet on the floor.
"I saw this Checkers packet on the floor and something behind. As we approached, it started squirming, moving and making sounds. I was horrified. You don't expect to find a baby on your doorstep," Schalkwyk said.
She says she found a handwritten note, apparently from the mother, tucked in to the little boy's blanket. She says his medicine was in the packet.
According to Van Schalkwyk, the author of the note said they were 24-years-old and love the child very much but would not be a good mother to him as they had no job nor a place to stay.
Van Schalkwyk says with the help of the community and a social worker who happened to be driving past, she took the baby to the police station.
Police have confirmed that a case of abandonment has been opened at Umbilo SAPS.
KwaZulu-Natal Social Development spokesperson, Ncumisa Ndelu says the little boy is being cared for.
"He was placed in a place of safety and he is safe and doing well. We have had no complaints so far," Ndelu said.
