"We appeal to the members of the community that the police are very vigilant and will ensure that [suspects] are arrested because of fake cases being opened," the SAPS's Thembeka Mbhele says.

Mbhele has singled out an incident involving a Mount Edgecombe resident.

According to police, the 37-year-old who appeared in court this week, was planning on staging his own hijacking for an insurance claim.

Mbhele says two others were involved.

"His vehicle, a sliver Jaguar, was recovered in the Chesterville area. The suspects were eventually arrested. A thorough police interrogation revealed that the victim had planned the hijacking in order to claim insurance," she says.

The man's facing charges of perjury and defeating the ends of justice.
