A 36-year-old mother survived after she was stabbed 14 times, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend at her home in Willowfountain, in Pietermaritzburg.

She was attacked on the evening of Christmas, and after she and the father of her baby, went their separate ways.

The department's Mhlaba Memela says it's alleged he went to the home and demanded they get back together.

He says things turned violent when she refused. "He kicked open the door and he pulled the woman out of her bed and started stabbing her."

"He informed her that his intention is to kill her because he had tried all options to get her back but it did not work out. This is a typical case of gender-based violence," he added.
