Emergency services personnel including police search and rescue, firefighters, medics and sea rescue officials were the first on the scene of collapsed homes, landslides and flooded rivers and streets.

Together with volunteers, rescuers worked for hours to get to victims trapped under rubble, and mounds of mud.

"There were some very tragic scenes that played out - very horrific and sad scenes. As paramedics, and rescue personnel - we know how to deal with it. This is not to say we are immune to it, but when the time comes and people need assistance - we know the demeanour we need to be able get the job done," he said.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert Mckenzie says many rescuers worked for almost two-days straight.

"It's amazing to see different individuals from different entities, and different specialities coming together and assisting each other. A lot of the rescues involved swift water . Remember, these are volunteers who came out to help in the cold, the rain and the dark," he said.
