Medics say KwaNdengezi residents should still be on alert

Emergency services are cautioning residents in KwaNdengezi near Mariannridge - after heavy rainstriggered mudslides that buried homes in the area yesterday.

Six people were killed when thick mud and debris demolished eight houses yesterday.  

A seven-month-old baby and a nine-year-old child were among the victims.  

Emergency teams, including eThekwini fire and rescue, had gone to one home that had collapsed.

Netcare911's Shawn Herbst says after they arrived in the community, they were told that more families need help.

Medics say roads in the area remain closed as portions of the lanes have collapsed or have fallen trees blocking access. 

The Co-operative Governance Department say the death toll in KZN's storms has increased to 51.
