Health officials in the country are investigating the events that led to the death of a KZN medical student in Cuba.
Health spokesperson Joe Maila says it's not yet clear exactly when the incident took place but it happened this week.
"We have learnt with shock and sadness about the passing of one of our students who is based in Havana and apparently he died due to suicide but we are still trying to find the circumstances surrounding his death."

Maila says family and friends of the student will be offered counselling.
"We are organising trauma counselling for the family so they will be able to deal with this matter and those who close to the student will be provided with counselling," he says.
More than 700 KZN students are receiving medical training in Cuba.
