KZN may have to import blood

The South African National Blood Service in KwaZulu-Natal says it will have to consider importing blood from other provinces if stock levels do not improve significantly.
The service will be hosting a number of blood drives across the province today.
Some operations and medical procedures that require blood transfusions have been put on hold unless approved by senior medical practitioners.
The blood bank's stocks have been depleted across the country, with reserves for just 2.5 days.

KwaZulu-Natal only has reserves for 1.5 days. A five day supply is recommenced.Some operations and medical procedures that require blood transfusions have been put on hold unless approved by senior medical practitioners.
The SANBS' Muzi Ngcobo says they are in dire need of donations.
"Operating hours at donor centres have been extended to 6pm," he said.
Ngcobo is urging donors to come forward and give the gift of life.
