KZN matric pass rate up

KwaZulu-Natal has bettered its matric pass rate in 2018. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the pass rates in Gauteng, a short while ago.

A total of 76.2% of the 187 726 candidates - including 152 747 full-time candidates and 34 980 part-time candidates - who sat down to write their exams in the province last year, passed.

This compared to 72.9%, in 2017.

The results indicate an improvement of 3.3 percentage points.

The national pass rate is also up, from 75.1% in 2017 to 78.2% in 2018.

This, with a total of 796 542 candidates - comprising 629 141 full-time and 167 401 part-time candidates - across the country, writing the 2018 matric exams.

“The evidence I have just presented today, points unequivocally to a progress in the Basic Education sector in the area that matters most, namely learning outcomes,” Motshekga said today.

She also said, though, that "despite the notable stability of and improvements int he system, we are yet to cross our own Rubicon".

The results will be published in major newspapers tomorrow morning.
