The sentencing comes as South Africans across the country are pleading for an end to gender-based violence and crimes targeting women and children.

Activists have been calling for harsher sentences to be given to those convicted of attacking women and children.

A series of protests have been held in major South African cities and regions demanding action be taken by the necessary authorities.

Meanwhile, eThekwini male employees marched to the Durban City Hall earlier.

They want men to be more active in calling out bad behaviour amongst each other. They also encouraged men to play better roles in protecting women and children.
