KZN Human Settlements lambasted for housing promises
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The DA had accused the Department of Human Settlements in KZN of trampling the rights of many people left destitute after the April floods by not delivering on its housing promises.
"It is not acceptable to spend millions of rands of taxpayer's money, building defective houses and then having to later rectify the faults with budget that could have been used to build new houses," says the DA's Marlaine Nair.
The party's been reacting to a report by the auditor-general after an inspection was carried out at KZN's Temporary Residential Units.

Poor workmanship, non-existent waterproofing and electrical connections and uneven wall panels were flagged as major issues in the document.
"We have a massive housing backlog in KZN, which makes it even more crucial to have proper oversight.
"There must be zero-tolerance for poor workmanship. MEC Mahlaba and his department simply have to do better, this is not acceptable at all."
