KZN Human Settlements defends unfinished housing project
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
More than 800 people remain stuck in a transit camp in Umbhayi because of an incomplete housing development in Tongaat.
The Democratic Alliance inspected the government housing project on Wednesday.
Construction was halted more than three years ago, leaving families stranded at the camp.
The DA's Zamani Khuzwayo says it's still nowhere near completion.
"Since then they built those houses, but there is no roof. We did write to the officials requesting an explanation why this is happening. They just ignore us."

"We wrote to PG Mavundla our chairperson of the cluster and who happens to be the deputy mayor because there is no response."
KZN Human Settlement's Mlungisi Khumalo says the department is working with the eThekwini Municipality to make sure the project is finished.
"The project was meant to yield 248 houses, that's just the first phase. Over 248 families had to be relocated to temporary units, this was to make way for the development.
"To date, the department can also confirm that 95% of the services, which includes underground infrastructure, has been installed."
