MEC Sbongiseni Dhlomo is responding to calls by various unions for the Minister of Health investigate the healthcare system in KZN, which they say is on the brink of collapse.

"We have no problem with that. After all, we are just a province with a national structure that we report to. That partner will not have a challenge with that," he said.

Hospersa in particular says it's worried about the poor state of cancer treatment in the public health sector - and an exodus of cancer treatment specialists.

Dhlomo says in they will be seeking assistance from the private healthcare system to address the problem, temporarily.

"There's a plan we've put in place. It's not a permanent plan. Doctors in the public sector at Grey's Hospital will assist us and on some days - and come to work at Nkosi Albert Luthuli and provide that type of service. There are certain private oncologists that come from an organisation called Rainbow Oncologists that come to give us sessions and provide support here at Nkosi Albert Luthuli," he said.
